"The most gripping example of the federal government's failure to address
First Nations issues in an area of direct Federal responsibility is the
situation of First Nations children. We face the prospect of losing yet
another generation of children as they are taken away from families who are
too poor to take care of them," said National Chief Fontaine. "At least one in
four First Nations children currently live in poverty, and one in ten are under state care.
This is a tragedy that is shocking and shameful for all Canadians."

"The premature mortality rate for First
Nations people in Manitoba is twice
that of the rest of the population," said
Dr. Dean Sandham, dean of the faculty
of medicine at the university."
