The New Tobique First Nation
Post-Secondary Education

I believe that education is the key to the social, economic, political,
and cultural development of Tobique First Nation.  We need to
encourage our members to attain university education, community
college and specialized training.  I will therefore present the
following recommendations to the Council for approval and
implementation:

  • Examine all options that will allow the Tobique Chief and
Council to increase financial support for post-secondary
    students

  • Establish an incentive program that recognizes academic
achievements of university and community college students

  • Provide incentives for enrolment in specialized areas such as
    forestry, fisheries, business administration, public
    administration, and health

  • Develop and implement an enhanced summer job program for
    post-secondary and community college students

  • Establish academic support programs such as tutoring,
    relocation, counseling, and computer training

  • Encourage students to attend local, regional, and national
conferences or workshops related to their area of
    specialization

  • Establish a community-based orientation program for first
    year students

  • Maintain communication between students and staff members
of the post-secondary program (e.g. regular staff visits,
    newsletter, website)

  • Sponsor fall and winter university-based social gatherings for
    our students

  • Ensure that formal education is recognized in job selections
and assignment of duties and responsibilities

  • Sponsor regular consultation meetings with students and
encourage student presentations to the Tobique Chief and
    Council
