This letter was faxed to the AFN. Grand Chief Phil Fontaine Assembly of First Nations, Trebla Building 473 Albert Street Suite 810 Ottawa, ON K1R 5B4 Tuesday, September 04, 2007 It appears, from your lack of apparent outrage, that you have been out of the loop on some very important issues that are quickly developing and will seriously affect indigenous peoples health and land rights throughout Canada. The first major issue is the Algonquin Nation of Frontenac County, versus the Frontenac Ventures Corp. (mining company). It is imperative that someone in your position, with your bully pulpit, take up such a cause as a means of unifying the indigenous people of Canada, thereby strengthening our resolve and providing a means for political and self empowerment. Every day that you remain disinterested in such essential causes absolutely brings about great injury to all First Nation peoples. Your silence on such topics equates to acceptance and frankly this will not stand. You are the Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and as such you have a responsibility to comment upon and make known your position concerning issues that fundamentally speak to the basic rights of the indigenous people of Canada. Whether you like it or not, that is one of the elemental callings of your position. Moreover, if you and your staff are unable or unwilling to take a stand on such issues then it is high time that someone with the necessary commitment, ability, and willingness takeover and do the job right. Here is a link to an article from the Gazette out of (Montreal) in regard to the Algonquin Nation of Frontenac County, versus the Frontenac Ventures Corp. http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=10c691f6-8cad-4958-9a46- 854db0d9d67c Of additional importance, Harper, Bush and Howard are currently discussing the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership while at the summit of pan-Pacific leaders being held today in Australia. The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership proposes that nuclear energy-using countries and uranium- exporting countries band together in a new nuclear club to promote and safeguard the industry. Central to the plan is a proposal that all used nuclear fuel be repatriated to the original uranium exporting country for disposal. That should be big news in Canada, the world's largest uranium producer.†This is of concern to Indigenous land and environmental rights, for we all know where that uranium waste will end up. Here is a link to the Bruce Cheadle article distributed by the Canadian Press, via yahoo news. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/070903/national/harper_apec It is essential that you or your office (in the form of a press release) speak out on these issues, while they are still in their progressing stages. To do so after the fact, (I.e. Saskatchewan) after the bloodshed and tears, is in every way unacceptable, negligent, and impeachable. Do your job and act like a leader! Sincerely, Violet C Eichhorn |
